Something just never changed. Such is the case of data recording. 20 years back, computer data was written on a magnetic piece, a diskette. Now it is more of the same, only the memory capability is much higher in a CD. The problem of the old diskette, as its known 5 1/4 (five and a quarter), is the probability of being damaged. The diskette is designed such that the data records are protected and an empty space is made for the diskette reader to scan the records. We apply the same concept here to protect our CD recordings. Moreover, you can write on with just a "pencil" like old days!
